When to Replace Your Thermostat

3 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Thermostat

Your thermostat has a lot of control over your home’s comfort and general air quality. If you have a smart thermostat, it has almost total control. It’s crucial that this device holds up and performs well. Here are some reasons to replace or upgrade your thermostat:

  1. You replaced your HVAC units. Whenever you get a new heater or air conditioner, it is recommended that you also upgrade your thermostat. As technology advances, these units have new demands that can only be satisfied by a newer thermostat. To get the most efficiency and best performance, the thermostat should be similar in age to the HVAC units. Similarly, if you notice your thermostat and your heater are widely different in age, it may be time to upgrade one. Consult with your local HVAC technician to determine whether it’s time for an upgrade.
  2. Your system is registering incorrect temperatures. Your thermostat’s basic function is to recognize the temperature and communicate with your HVAC units. When the device doesn’t register the correct temperature, you won’t get warm or cool air when you need it. The opposite is also true: your thermostat may be turning on the heat or AC when you don’t need it because it registers the temperature incorrectly. To test this theory, get a portable indoor thermometer, or even an infrared thermometer, to see what temperature registers around the room. If it’s different than the temperature on the thermostat, it may be time for a repair or upgrade.
  3. You’re still using an analog model. If you’re still using an old thermostat, it may be worth upgrading to a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats have a variety of features that can add convenience to your life and reduce monthly energy costs. You’ll be able to automatically program the temperature for the time of day and control everything from your smartphone.
